SMITH RIVER DISTRICT
The Smith River District includes the Woolwine and Fairystone communities and part of the Town of Stuart. The Rock Castle Gorge offers backpacking, fishing, camping, and hiking. The Smith River is a popular attraction for fishing and rafting. The Rock Castle Creek is a stocked trout stream. Also located within the district are Brenda Shultz's renowned Tennis Camp, the Gerald Baliles Homeplace, the Agee-Baliles Grist Mill, the Goblintown Historic Grist Mill, the Wood Brothers Racing Museum, Goose Point, Fairy Stone State Park and numerous horse trails, including horse trainers and shoeing. Folks can swim, play ball, tennis, and soccer at the two DeHart Parks within the district (one in Woolwine and one in Stuart). You can even access the Blue Ridge Parkway nearby. There are four Bed and Breakfasts, Fairy Stone, Goose Point, The Reserve, and Deer Run Campground in the area for those looking for local accommodations. The Smith River District is home to the Woolwine and Fairystone Fire Departments, the Woolwine Elementary School, the Smith River Rescue Squad, churches of all faiths, and numerous timber businesses. The Woolwine Ruritan Club meets on the first Thursday of every month. Local events include the Virginia Covered Bridge Festival held the third Saturday of June, Octoberfest held on the second Saturday in October; the Rescue Squad's annual Truck Giveaway; and a Halloween Festival and Beauty Contest at Woolwine Elementary.

Crystal was born in the Meadows of Dan area of Patrick County and was one of seven children. She is married to Mavin Harris and together they have three sons and four grandchildren. She has lived in Woolwine since 1963 and has worked in the Patrick County School System as a Cafeteria Manager for thirty years.
She is a member of the Woolwine Fire Department Auxillery and member of the Smith River Rescue Squad where she served as Captain for three years.
